February 13 th , 2007 ------------------ History of Global Warfare European Heavy Horseman Social and Historical Background (long process) Begins with the decay of the Roman Empire and the fall of Rome Slow declination of the Empire Invading Germanic tribes become incorporated into the Roman Empire At first they were incorporated into the citizenship Then they were incorporated into the military and took over slowly Germanic Tribes- all male In the beginning they lack the ability to lay siege to Romans Roman Estates turn to their own resources to protect themselves Every attack causes resources to deteriorate So the land owners strike a deal with barbarians-sealed by marriage After marriage the estate falls to the daughter’s husband (barbarian) Militarily- Highly decentralized Roman Part and German Part, but they both have military tradition Separate category for the “armed followers” or elite bodyguard Defense in depth pointed in all directions (surrounded by enemies) Mobile army comes to mean mounted army
