Elaborate the term GIS with example GEO-GRAPH-IC-AL:Geo-word-forming element meaning ‘earth’. Graph- a combining form meaning “drawn,” “written” IC- Geo-Graph-IC word is used in USA AL- Geo-Graph-IC-AL word is used in UK What is GISThe classic definition:“Geographic information system or geographical information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data.” Traditionally GIS was a desktop system where people captured/ created/edited, stored and visualized the data. How GIS becomes Science: Geographic information science, the scienceof GIS, is concerned with geographic concepts, the primitive elements used to describe, analyze, model, reason about, and make decisions on phenomena distributed on the surface of the earth. What are Geographic Information Studies: Geographic informationscience or geographical informationscience (GIScience) is the scientific discipline that studiesdata structures and computational techniques to capture, represent, process, and analyze geographic information. That’s why it sometimes call Geographic Information Studies. On the other hand: GIS study areas are Agriculture, Health, business, Communication, Water Management, Energy, Environment, Weather, Climate Change, Education, Security & Defense etc. Component of GIS: GIS integrates five key components: hardware, software, data, people, and methods. i.Hardware: Hardware is the computer on which a GIS operates. ii.Software: GIS software which provide tools to run and edit spatial information. It helps to query, edit, run and display GIS data. iii.Data:GIS data is combination of graphic and tabular data. Graphic can be vector or raster. Both type of data can be created in house using GIS software or can be purchased. iv.People:People are user of Geographic Information System. v.Methods:Methods include how the data will be retrieved, input into the system, stored, managed, transformed, analyzed, and finally presented in a final output. FUNDAMENTAL OF GIS (504) CHAPTER – 1 BASICS OF GIS 1.What is GIS? Elaborate the term with example. Or, what do you understand by the term GIS?
