04-03-2007 Emergence of modern warfare is associated with advanced technology but it can be argued that modern warfare came into being due to new ideas before the technologies were around. The Managerial Revolution - Taking control of mass, industrial warfare and then losing control again I. Pressure for “management” a. The French Revolution (leve’e en masse)- a structure change on a massive scale i. There had never been an organized group on that scale every before ii. Large militaries move in lots of separate little groups which creates an enormous problem of management. iii. Letters from the lead general containing orders were dispatched to the separate groups, Napoleon could dictate 9 different letters to 9 different scribes for 9 different group commands that all were for the culmination of the campaign. iv. Very complex, the commands were for weeks at a time and had to be logistically sound in order for it to all come together at the end. v. Napoleon’s success has two effects 1. opponents decide to adopt part of Napoleons strategy, Landwehr aka arming the country side 2. the Prussians in particular experience their defeat as a visceral
