04-24-2007 Airpower and Precision Weapons - bombing to win a war I. Post WWI a. Attempt to find a way to not repeat the tactics of WWI b. Giulio Douhet Theories i. The bomber will always get through ii. Attack/bomb the civilian population II. US in WWII a. US develops a twist on Douhet’s theory called “Industrial Web Theory” i. Take out industry and resources, hit the right string and the web collapses ii. In the beginning no one knows what the right string is 1. thought that it was the ball bearings which were hard to destroy from the air and the bombs were not as accurate as believed 2. Bomber didn’t always get through, radar capabilities helped anti- aircraft efforts 3. Began to bomb things called strategic targets like a railroad facility 4. Workers became the target (their homes) so that they would not go to work and help the industry/war effort III. Vietnam a. Some believe that the bombing in Vietnam did not help the US war effort. i.
