Abbie Shaw Mrs. McCullough Honors English 10 / Period 9 4 March 2019 A National Sleep Foundation poll found 59 percent of 6th through 8th graders and 87 percent of high school students in the U.S. were getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep on school nights. This problem has a rather easy solution and that would be to postpone school start times to after 8:30 p.m. The school day should begin around or after 8:30 a.m. because students will perform better on standardized tests, less likely to arrive late, and be involved in significantly less automobile accidents. Reducing the school start time to around 8:30 a.m. students will perform exceptionally better on standardized tests. It has been proven throughout many studies that students perform significantly better at later times in the morning.
