Michelle Noel Professor Larriviere ENC1102 S 12:00-2:50 p.m. March 30, 2019 Essay # 3 CH.11 Freedom pg. 714 # 3 The Tradition and The Ritual Would you dare stop a rituals and tradition? Especially if it drives your society. A tradition can be as simple as cutting a tree down and putting in your home for Christmas. And others can be far more important and sinister traditions of racism and sexism. But at that time period you wouldn’t question it though. In the stories “The Lottery” and “The Sleep” Shirley Jackson and Caitlin Horrocks expressed what happen if you provoked it or just question the tradition. “The Lottery” and “The Sleep” are allegories of sinister tradition and rituals because of the belief the tradition is helping them, the danger of the tradition, and the dying of the society. The stories “The Lottery” and “The Sleep” both shown of the belief that the tradition and ritual is actually helping them. And that is why they continue on tradition and ritual. In “The Lottery” they believe that if they do this lottery that they will have plenty of harvest that year.
