04-03-2007 Understanding Eating Disorders 1. Disorders are severe disturbances in eating behavior characterized by preoccupation with weight concerns and unhealthy efforts to control weight. Cultural pressure to be thing for women. Trying to achieve unrealistic standards of beauty. 2. Two syndromes: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa 3. Anorexia: involves intense fear of gaining weight, disturbed body image, refusal to maintain normal weight and dangerous measures to lose weight. 4. Two types: a. Restricted type anorexia nervosa i. Reduce their intake of food, sometimes literally starving themselves b. binge eating/purging type i. attempt to lose weight by forcing themselves to vomit after meals by misusing laxatives and diuretics and by engaging in excessive exercise 5. Medical Problems a. Amenorrhea b. Gastrointestinal problems c. Low blood pressure d. Osteoporosis e. Metabolic disturbances 6. Bulimia nervosa: involves habitually engaging in out of control overeating followed by
