There are many lessons that can be learned from the Vietnam conflict small and large, forme I think what should be the most obvious answer either was not learned or the lesson has not been applied. The lesson being, when sending American service men and women into armed conflict have a real objective and let the military handle it. One of the biggest problems with Vietnam was civilian leadership dictating to the military what could and could not be done, things like not going into Cambodia to pursue the Viet Cong. The original goal was the nebulousidea of preventing a domino effect in Southeast Asia, in which it was believed that if one countryfell to communism many other would do the same.
