The balance of power to the behavior of the major powers in 1914 Intro 200 The balance of power in Europe was a major issue especially after the declaration of the world war one in august 1914. Balance of power can be described as the Midian power enough to prevent one nation from imposing its will or invading another country or its interests. Balance of power is characterized by constant changes from the equilibrium and for this reason it cannot actually be achieved. However, nations try to ensure a near balance of power by accepting each other’s strength and weaknesses. Additionally, balance of power between nations can either be simple or complex depending on the establishing states as well as the issue at hand (Fromkin). For instance, simple balance of power aims at maintaining the safety of the nations and its citizens worldwide, while the complex power balance focuses on maintaining the peace between two or more warring military factions. In 1914, each of the major protagonists believed to hold the balance of power soon after the world war I was declared as each nation had its own strength. However, with the combination of the contemporary weapons and old war tactics led to warfare horrors where some powers failed to add their strength in the equation of power balance. The major powers of 1914 were Germany, Britain, France, Russia, and later on joined by Japan and the United States. It is paramount that the balance of power was a concept that impacted the behaviors of the major powers in 1914 following the declaration of the world war I. Concept of balance of power 400 The concept of balance of power envisages the equal sharing of power among the respective entities and the phenomenon is vital in the process of war. In 1914, the concept played a major part in the politics of the major protagonist of the world war I who were the allied group consisting German and others, verses the central group which comprised the United Kingdom and other states. In contemporary culture and politics, the concept of balance of power is taken to act as a condition of peace, a cause of war, or a combination of both. In this regard, the 1914 power balance was an amalgamation of both the causative and the peace factors of power balance where other nations joined the major powers to create two blocks of allied and central powers that went against each other (Fromkin). The idea of security dilemma is an essential aspect in the integration of balance of power as a cause of war such that, all states at one point
