Mrs. GonzalezEnglish IV4 February 2019Controversial Topic: Cloning
In the world of science, especially in this time and age, there are several technologicaladvances being made. Ranging from improved approaches to different types of procedures, oreven advanced medications, it was only a matter of time before cloning became a reality. Thereare various pros and cons that go into the main debate considering whether or not cloning isbeneficial. However, in this essay both sides will be covered to strengthen the idea that cloningdoes have its benefits in a controlled manner and environment. To help better understand what exactly cloning is and the different components that gointo conducting an experiment as such, the following paragraph will explain. The term cloningitself refers to the number of different processes that can be used to “produce geneticallyidentical copies of a biological entity” (“Cloning”). A variety of materials can be cloned, including entire organisms, genes, cells, and tissues. This relates to the different types of cloningwhich fall into three categories: gene cloning, reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning.Gene cloning refers to the production of gene or DNA segment copies. This is completed byinserting a foreign DNA into a vector and then inserting it into the host for it to multiply.Reproductive cloning is the copying of whole animals. This is a bit more complicated than genecloning as it takes transferring DNA from a somatic (normal cell i.e. skin) into an emptied eggcell. This allowed for the new development of an early-stage embryo which is then implantedinto the womb of an adult female animal. Once the animal is born, it is referred to as the clone, much like “Dolly the Sheep” (“Cloning”). The final type of cloning, which is therapeutic, is quitesimilar to that of reproductive cloning. This type of cloning producers embryonic stem cells forexperiments that can create tissues or organs for those that are already damaged. The extractionof stem cells comes from cloned embryos in their development stage, consequently destroying
them. While all three of these methods have their different methods of technique, they each haveboth pros and cons to each one of them.
