The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey are two novels in which the main characters are faced with challenges trying to achieve their goal or destination they want to get to. The main characters in both of these poems go on a long journey’s away from home. They were both hero’s because they fought for what they wanted. Odysseus is on a journey back home to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War for 10 years and Gilgamesh is on a journey to find immorality after discovering what death is and how it works. During the journey of Odysseus, Odysseus has to go through several difficulties such as facing the suitors, Cyclops, and the wrath of Greek Gods. Many of these things attempted to stop him but as a hero he went for it and did what he wanted to do. His main agenda was to safely return back home to his family. On the other hand, Gilgamesh, the selfish being he is wanted to become immortal for himself and become powerful. He made his way into Utnapishtim and encountered Humbaba and made sure nothing got in his way and journeyed with his “brother” Enkidu. When the death of Enkidu comes that’s another challenge Gilgamesh faces. He had a hard time getting over it, but he continued on and traveled to Utnapishtim. Both Gilgamesh and Odysseus were given hero like traits in the books and both had a task in hand to complete. Gilgamesh and Odysseus both had different places to go and had different goals to achieve. They also differ in who they are doing it for. Odyesseus wanted to do it for his family and Gilgamesh wanted to be immortal forever only for himself. He was known to be very selfish. Gilgamesh is a strong fierce person who is born “two third divine and one third human” and is the ruler of Uruk. Gilgamesh’s only objective was for him to go on a journey to find immorality after he finds out what death is when Enkidu dies. After he sees Enkidu die, he becomes scared because he knows he is not immortal. The only way to find immorality was if Gilgamesh traveled to Utnapishtim. Gilgamesh was a very selfish being who left his people of Uruk. His
