3 Aspects of a team 5 1. Shared Goals 2. Competence 3. Commitment
Shared goals 2 – Renlund (2016) 3 – Barker (2014) 6 “Team members need to have common goals and shared ambitions in order to be as efficient as possible.” 2 Often called the ‘ shared mental model .’ Allows team members to anticipate what is needed to complete a task and what are the actions of other team members. “Setting out clear roles, expectations and goals will encourage this behavior” 3 Important for each member to understand their part and how it fits in the bigger picture.
competence 4 – Crowley, Payne & Kennedy (2014) 7 Extremely important for team members to be competent in their ability to carry out their tasks and add value to the team A zeal to learn, expand and grow with the team is also required for a team to stay together and thrive. While everyone may be great at their jobs, the idea of respect, collaboration and a unified approach is vital. 4
commitment 5 – Kozlowski & Ilgen. (2007) 8 “Teams should be committed to the goals/vision of the organization” 5 Going above and beyond the basic requirements of the role will demonstrate commitment Team responsibilities need to be viewed as important, and are aware that their actions affect not just themselves, but others in the team too.
