Cultural Competence
Abstract
As social workers, we should be culturally competent while working with any client. To be
culturally relevant is information and aptitude arrange that a social worker must create to be
effective with multicultural clients. To be culturally competent it is a continuous learning process
(Kirst-Ashman, & Hull, 2018). To be culturally competent is to include monitoring one’s reality,
and create inspirational mentalities towards cultural variances, and gain wisdom of those cultural
differences.

Cultural Competence Background
Working with Claudia who is six years old Hispanic born in the United States lives in an
urban zone with her parents. Claudia’s parents left Nicaragua half a year before Claudia was
born; with no relatives, however, they have become friends with some neighbors. Her parents are
undocumented residents who battle financially since could not acquire their citizenship. Her
father works when he can, by doing manual labor, while her mother a few days a week works in a
nail salon. Claudia and her family live in an underprivileged area of town where there is a large
amount of misconduct; Claudia and her parents have a supporting relationship with one another.
After witnessing a mugging Claudia has become anxious and unsure about the people around her,
and she has become more protective of the people she does trust (Plummer, Markis, & Brocksen,
2014).
