Arsh Chopra Advanced English 10 A Tale of Two Cities Final Essay Luminous Light Outshines Devastating Darkness Light has always been represented as a symbol of hope, power, and safety. Even in the darkest of times, people always look towards light for salvation and rescue. Charles Dickens depicts this very clearly in his novel A Tale of Two Cities . His major symbol of light, Lucie Manette, shines in even the darkest hours of gloom. The vengeful Madame Defarge presses on with her evil ways. Light is a symbol of goodness while the darkness is always associated with evil. Light is also seen in its physical form, like moonlight during a time of despair. Darkness can be easily represented by the looming shadows of doom. Another way that light can be expressed is fire and the light that it brings. Finally, darkness can be expressed through the moods and emotions of characters. Through his novel A Tale of Two Cities , Charles Dickens clashes light and dark in order to exemplify that even in the darkest times of desperation, light will always shine in order to drive away the desolation. Lucie Manette, a very prominent character in Charles Dickens’s novel, has the power and courage to save people with her expression of light. This directly contrasts Madame Defarge, the savage revolutionary who will stop at nothing for her revenge upon the Evremonde family. The true battle of Light vs. Dark occurs when Madame Defarge visits the Manettes while they are in France. This occurs during Book the Third, Chapter 3, The Shadow. Lucie addresses Madame Defarge, pleading, and begs:
