02/07/07 Intro to European Civilization Charlemagne is about 6' to 6'4” and he has a beer belly (was a modest drinker, but drank a lot compared to today's terms) Has was basically blonde haired and blue eyed. He had at least 4 wives, and at least 4 concubines. He had probably about 10 illegitimate children and about 8 legitimate children. He has at least 6 legitimate daughters The church is concerned about monogamy and divorce at this time. (at this time plural marriages were fairly common, mostly men married to more than one women) It's hinted that Charlemagne has relationships with his daughters. Charlemagne got an elephant as a present from the Calif of Baghdad. (this goes to show that he also has ties with Muslims) Charlemagne is called “The Great” because of the copying of books and the expansion of education I. Seignorialism (Manorialism) 1. Lord 2. Knight(s) 3. Peasants – Both Free and Not free 4. Serfs – tied the the estate B. Manor (usually were completely self sufficient)
