Bio Exam 2 Study Guide Potential Energy – The energy stored by matter as a result of its location or spatial arrangement. o Energy possessed even when an object is not moving. Stored energy because of the arrangement of atoms. Kinetic Energy – energy associated with the relative motion of objects. o Moving objects perform work by imparting motion to other matter. Free Energy – the portion of a system’s energy that can perform work when temperature and pressure are uniform throughout the system. o = - ∆G ∆H T∆S (H=enthalpy; S=entropy; T=absolute temp in K) o –G=spontaneous (The system must either give up enthalpy [-H] or give up order [+TS] or both). o +G=never spontaneous o Spontaneous processes decrease the system’s free energy. Entropy – a measure of disorder and randomness o The more randomly arranged a collection of matter is, the greater the entropy. The First Law of Thermodynamics (Principle of Conservation of Energy) – The energy of the universe is constant. Energy can be transformed or transferred, but cannot be created or destroyed. o The electric company does not make energy, but merely converts it to a form that is convenient to use. The Second Law of Thermodynamics – Every energy transfer or transformation
