Module 3 Journal (Go to FILE, the DOWNLOAD AS, and the pick a format that you can edit) Your journals are meant to help you take notes and study as you move through the modules. They should be completed little by little as you do each lesson, not as a stand-alone assignment to be done all at once. For each term the textbook definition has been provided to you. You will create an example, application, or other means of helping you remember the term. The last column should be written in a complete and grammatically correct sentence. It should not be a repeat of other examples. Term Definition or Description How will you remember? (Written in a complete sentence. Do not repeat previous examples.) 3.01: Sensation: Do You Feel It? 1. Synesthesia disorder in which the signals from the various sensory organs are processed in the wrong cortical areas, resulting in the sense information being interpreted as more than on sensation A disorder where information regarding ‘senses’ is being treated as more than just sensation. 2. Sensation The process that occurs when special receptors in the sense organs are activated, allowing various forms of outside stimuli to become neural signals in the brain. What you actually feel from internal or external forces. 3. Stimuli Anything in a person’s environment that can be picked up by the senses (e.g. dog barking, smelly garbage) Anything that can be picked up by a person’s sense. 4. Transduction Conversion of energy in the environment into messages our nervous system can interpret. What we call when the energy in the environment is turned into messages that our brain can understand.
5. Just noticeable different (difference threshold) The smallest noticeable difference that can be detected between two stimuli. The smallest noticeable difference between two stimuli that can be detected. 6. Absolute threshold The smallest amount of stimulation that we can detect 50% of the time. The amount of stimulation that we can detect half of the time. 7. Habituation Tendency of the brain to stop attending to constant, unchanging information. The thing that the brain does when it stops attending to the constant, unchanging information. 8. Sensory adaptation Tendency of sensory receptor cells to become less responsive to a stimulus that is unchanging. The thing that the brain does when the senses adapt to the environment. 9. Weber’s Law Law explaining that there is not a specific value for difference thresholds, but rather it is a constant proportion based on the size of the initial stimulus. The law that explains that there is not a specific value for difference threshold. 10. Signal Detection Theory A collection of concepts that seeks to explain how and why people will respond differently to the same stimuli under different circumstances.
