EXPERIMENT 3: SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF MANGANESE INSTEELObjective1)To understand and apply Beer’s Law in spectrochemical analysis.2)To determine spectrophotometrically manganese as permanganate ion, MnO4- in steel.IntroductionThe overall goal of this experiment was to determine the percent mass of manganesein a steel sample with an unknown amount of manganese using spectrophotometry. Mass, bydifference, was calculated for the standard and unknown steel samples. Absorbance wasrecorded for the permanganate solutions at different dilution levels. Absorbance was alsorecorded for the unknown solution. Using the mass of the standard steel sample, theconcentration of permanganate could be calculated. Using this concentration, theconcentration of the permanganate could be calculated for the different dilutions. Theabsorbance values at the different dilution levels were plotted. Using the best-fit line for theequation from the generated plot and the recorded absorbance of the unknown solution, theconcentration of the unknown was calculated and then used, along with the calculated massof the unknown steel sample to determine the percent of manganese in the unknown steel
