Professor Kinard BA 427 Oliver’s Market – Case Analysis Overview Steve Mass purchased Cotati Farmers Market in 1988, a failing supermarket which Steve thought “I could do better” even though Steve had no grocery experience. In 1990 Steve added a Deli and a year later in 1991, Steve added an aisle of health foods. In April of 2000, Steve opened a second store in Santa Rosa. From 2000 to 2004 Oliver’s Cotati store began to lose money at a rate of about 45% per year while Oliver’s Santa Rosas income rose until 2002 where income fell. In the case of the Santa Rosa location, total sales are increasing 6% per year while the total cost of sales is growing 5% and operating expenses are rising at 8.5%. Oliver’s Cotati store is seeing a 3% drop in overall sales year over year while costs of sales and operating expenses both increase by over 1% year over year. Tom, a general manager for Oliver’s Markets, was responsible for authoring the stores' budgets with input from upper management. Issue Identification Toms position as both general manager and essentially Oliver Markets financial advisor rolled into one package; Tom is unable to effectively mentor and pass the reigns to the other management team.
