1 MAS183 Statistical Data Analysis Ch 3: Data Display and Description 2 Types of data: Numerical or Categorical Categorical data are labels (what colour? what gender?) Numerical data are quantities (how much? how many?) Watch out for numerical coding of categorical data. (Blue=1, Black=2, Green=3; Female=1, Male=2, etc) Types of Categorical Data Nominal no implied order, e.g., gender {male, female}, eye colour {blue, brown, green}. Ordinal intrinsic order, e.g., some survey responses {strongly disagree, disagree, don’t know, agree, strongly agree}, education level {primary, secondary, tertiary, higher degree} 3 Discrete numerical data are usually counts (e.g., number of plants in an area, number of people who are left eye dominant, number of bacteria in a culture, number of diseased animals). There is no ‘in between’ adjacent values. Values are usually integers (from counting). Types of Numerical Data: Continuous or Discrete Continuous numerical data are measurements (e.g., length of fish, area of leaf, time from egg laying to hatching, price of gold). Precision limited only by the
