The Age of Empire: American Imperialism 9/21/07 Why Empire? Economic Interests – wanted to control the production of raw materials… dramatic growth in manufacturing…US wanted control of China to sell their goods in Chinese markets… Missionary & “Civilizing” Impulse – US wanted to “civilize” and bring democracy to other nations North-South Reunification – made the Spanish-American War seem like a wonderful thing b/c it brought the north and south back together Spanish American War or “The Splendid Little War” - only lasted a few months, few casualties, US won, came back more unified 1895 Cuban Revolutionaries launch war for independence - January 1898, bombing of the Maine – still unsure of what happened to the Maine April 1898, US enters war against Spain – “cause of humanity” sent troops to the Philippines, US destroyed Spanish troops…lasted 4 months…6,000 Americans died. August 1898, Spain surrenders
