There has been many circumstances where I have displayed terrible listening skills. One situation has been between my best friend and me. On occasion when we meet up to have lunch or have a girl’s night out, she will proceed to vent about her frustration as a single mother or her problems at work. I find myself displaying Pseudo-listening since I caught myself cherry picking bits and pieces of the conversation while nodding and smiling but not really listening. I have learned during this exercise that this form of poor listening is was also linked to stage hogging and selective listening. During the time where my friend had the floor, I was also waiting to respond in telling my story about how I was feeling and how my day was going. Therefore, not only was I listening to only parts of her message that interest me, I ignored everything else while waiting to express my own ideas and feelings (The Executive Advisory).
