UNIT IV – CASE STUDY – SIX SIGMA AT 3M, INCSix Sigma OverviewSix Sigma is a data-driven problem-solving methodology. The focus is on process variations and emphasis is given to customer satisfaction. The aim of Six Sigma is to make a process effective around 9.99996% defect free by the continuous process improvement. Six Sigma is using the DMAIC framework to resolve the problem. The D is define the problem and the objective, M is measure what thing we need to improve, A is analyze the process, I is improve which is identify and implement the improvement, and C is control to ensure the improvement will sustain. Six Sigma benefits, costs, and risks at 3M3M has been a pioneer in the use of Six Sigma methods and tools to improve operations and quality. It started Six Sigma approach in 2001 when McNerney became new CEO of 3M. McNerney believed that Six Sigma will help energize the company, increase sale and cash flow, satisfy customer better and strengthen management development (Schroeder & Goldstein, 2018).With the initiatives to start the training for hundred senior executive and list out the list of 100 Six Sigma projects help 3M developed rapidly. Six sigma initiative at 3M was included two different improvement models they are DMAIC and DFSS. The model five steps DMAIC was used for existing process to help review and improve the processes and the DFSS was used new product development. For the case of 3M, the benefit of Six Sigma were remarkable. It helped to improveprocess significantly and were selected by upper management, reduce cost, increase in sale and cash flow, and gain more satisfaction and loyalty from external and internal customer. Besides that Six Sigma approach also help 3M developing management and more and more advance theircompetiveness in short term and long term. Especially, 3M were improved in grown in productivity and revenue when it applied Six Sigma in operation and quality management. CostThe cost to implement and maintain Six Sigma is tremendous; however, the result and benefits of Six sigma in cost saving and gain revenue for the company is more than that. In a report as of 2006, six sigma training program at 3M had trained for more than fifty five employees around the world with 45,000 project related to six sigma and quality control. This cost 3M a lot of money for training Six Sigma for senior executive and employees. Besides training cost, company also lost money in resource allocations because it was required 2-4% resource allocated to become Six Sigma black belt consultant.
