Exam 1 2A The Wheel of the Year is a calendar that the Celts follow. The Wheel has eight Druid festivals and celebrations, four of them are originated with the Celtics and the other four are originated with the Germanics. The four holidays with Celtic origins are Beltane, Inbolc, Samhain, and Lughnassdh and the other four with Germanic origins are Mabon, Ostara, Litha, and Yule. Each and every one has importance behind it for the Celts. The first Pagan holiday is Yule which is also known as Winter Solstice. Yule goes through December 20 th to the 23 rd . The Winter Solstice is a Lesser and Sun Sabbat which means that it’s a quarter holiday which breakups the year equally according of the sun’s position and it’s a falling sun. The importance behind Yule is to get people ready for the cold mouths that are to come and to remind them the heat of the sun gives them live. On these days they decorate tress with food that belongs in the cold to represent frequent growth and life through the frigid nights of winter. The second Pagan holiday is Imbolc which is on February 2 nd . People also call it The Promise of Spring. Imbolc means in the belly in Gaelic. At this time sheep start to give milk again and where animals and crops are blessed to live a healthy and new life. Imbolc is also a Greater and Moon Sabbat which means it has to fall on a full moon and in between the cross- quarter days. Ostara is the next holiday on the calendar. This holiday goes through March 19 th to the 22 nd . Ostara means that spring has come which means that it is warmer and days are longer. These days are a Lesser and Sun Sabbat just like Yule. Baltane is the festival of fire that is on May 1 st which means spring is coming to an end and it’s getting warmer and warmer. This is a time to thank the fertility of spring. They celebrate

by having a huge bonfire. Everyone wears flower crowns and dance around a flower pole of May. The next holiday is Litha. Litha celebrates the longest day of the year. This occurs on the June 19 th to the 23 rd . On these long days people work and also have fun because it’s a long day. Engagements are also announced on these days. Also, they continuing to bless the crops for a good harvest.
