Experiment 2: Component Tolerances Side Note: I was unable to record the resistances from each source separately. I put them all into a pile as soon as I read the directions to get all 15 of them, and before I read the instructions to try to keep them separate. Procedure: 1. The color pattern on the bands of 10KΩ resistors is brown, black, orange, gold. 2. The specified accuracy in the 20kΩ range is +/- 0.8% of rdg +/- 1 digit 3. All results in KΩ. I sat the resistor on the page of my lab book and pressed the red and black leads to each side of the resistor. Once the measurement on the multimeter remained constant, I removed the leads and recorded the result. I repeated this nine more times and the results are as follows. 9.88 9.90 9.89 9.89 9.88 9.88 9.90 9.90 9.90 9.89 4. Mean: 98.81/10 = 9.89 KΩ Variance: .0007/9 = 7.777 * 10 ^ -5 Standard Deviation: Square root of Variance = +/-.0088 5. According to the specified accuracy, the results could be off in either direction by .8%. .8% of 10k is 80, so my results could be off by 80Ω in either direction. My resulting mean was off by 110Ω. This shows that the resistor could potentially be a little less than actually 10kΩ, but it is very, very close. 6.
