It ended the reconstruction era because the republicans and democrats had a deal on what Rutherford B. Hayes would do when he becomes president. The main promise that the republicans promised the democrats was that if the democrats voted for Hayes, Hayes would remove the troops that were stationed in Louisiana and South Carolina. Another promise that the republicans made was that the democrats would have a place at the presidential patronage trough, and the democrats would have support from the republicans for a bill subsidizing the Texas and Pacific Railroad’s construction of a southern transcontinental line.2.In 1877, the presidents of the 4 largest railroads in the nation decided collectively to decrease the railroad worker’s wages by 10%. The railroad workers had been working hard as they had to watch the railroads take huge profits so they struck back. The working-class supported the railroad workers in this outrage because President Hayes called in federal troops to contain the railroad workers. Many railroad workers stopped working and in the end, over 100 people were dead. The railroad strike was significant because it showed that the federal, state, and local government only cared about the big businesses and not the workers.3.Many Chinese males immigrated to America in search of gold, and they were uneducatedand single. They didn’t earn as much as they thought they would when they came so when about half of them returned to China, they didn’t come back with much. The other half of the Chinese men that stayed in America still had a rough time. They worked as cooks, laundrymen, or as domestic servants. The cartoon on page 497 shows that white people mistreated Chinese immigrants. It shows racism because the Chinese man looks like a dirty gorilla while the Caucasian men look normal.
