Nursing in and of itself is a leadership role. According to Marquis and Huston, (2017) leaders influence, emphasize interpersonal relationships, direct followers and have goals that may or may not reflect a larger organization. They have a larger number of roles than managers do. Managers have clear direct functions and they are specifically delegated by the organization. They are expected to have clear communication with their employees and support them in fulfilling their roles as subordinates. (Williamson, n.d). Managers are expected to achieve the goals of the organization by any means that they can, this can include manipulation of staff, money and resources; leaders focus more on the group process and information gathering. They like to empower others in the workplace. All nurses are leaders, leaders have informal authority, they produce change. (Laureate Education, 2012) One leader that I can think about that is not management material is a co- worker of mine. She is wonderful at the leadership role with her patients.
