2 Systems theory was developed by a German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The main premise of this theory is the concentration of the system and not the individual. It allows for the system to be interconnected and the sum of the whole to be more than the parts separately (McCovery & Matusitz, 2014). When examining healthcare, an open system perspective works better; including all of the healthcare team and leaving no one out. A closed system is sometimes found, however there is isolation and healthcare inclines to be stagnant. The purpose of this paper is to look at healthcare and apply systems theory, re-examine a common issue in an organization and look at it with different perspectives. Description of the unit The unit we are going to examine is an 18-bed inpatient psychiatric unit that encompasses both mental health and addictions detox. This unit is a closed unit in that there is a specific skill set that is needed on the unit. There are many different policies on this unit that are not throughout the rest of the hospital. We only staff within our unit, as well as we are not able to be sent to other floors. Admissions are accepted from the emergency room, medical floors and other hospitals and facilities on a regular basis, keeping the unit full most of the time. This throughput is constant and everchanging depending on patients’ needs in the community. When receiving an admission from any of these places, we do a “discharge” from the unit or place they are from and do a “new admission” to our unit. This is an easy process to the emergency department, however when admitting from another medical floor or another facility the process becomes a little more difficult and diluted. The input and output are quite literal in this case, and feed into the negative feedback loop. According to Rwashana, Williams & Neema, (2009) a “negative feedback loop is a control system where the output of the system is fed back into the system. Patients get

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
