Exam 3 Review Sheet Water: Know the functions of water Know the sources of water and how it is lost in the body Know and describe what the water needs depend on (activity, diet, environment, humidity…) Understand the difference between dehydration and hyponatremia Be able to explain how water is regulated in the body (thirst mechanism, hormones) Minerals: Know the difference between major and trace minerals, and which ones are in each classification (7 major, 9 trace) Know what electrolytes, cations, and anions are **Do not need to know the specific recommended amounts** A table makes it easier to remember the minerals: E.g. Sodium Mineral Food Source Function Deficiency Toxicity Sodium Processed foods, salt Electrolyte and fluid balance, regulate blood pH Hyponatremia: Muscle cramps, mental apathy Hypernatremia: edema, acute hypertension Know the digestion/absorption/transport/storage, and the factors affecting these, for particular minerals (calcium, iron, zinc) Understand how minerals interact with one another (e.g. vitamin C and iron)
