Jermaine Stokes Looking at Kristen Dombeck’s “Swimming against the Rising Tide”, we get a glimpse of not only her background with religion, but also how it relates to the present-day discussion about global warming. As mentioned in Linell Ajello’s “What is an Essay”, an essay contains a “sense of exploration, nuance, and even ambivalence”, which is precisely what Dombeck does in her article. Her sense of exploration is apparent when she alludes to her prior belief of believing in God, making her being to something far bigger, and then later losing her faith as she looks at the way climate change deniers think – which is starkingly similar to how she trusted in God. Furthermore, as Ajello points out, a good essay asks a question which can’t be solved by nature. Dobeck asks “How do we bridge the distance between our own seemingly insignificant lives and actions and the scale of climate change, so global and so slow?” an issue appropriate to whether or not one believes in climate change.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
