[Type here] Laura Rodriguez How to Deaccess a Port-a-cath You have completed the therapy use with a port-a-cath which is an implanted port under the skin and now it is time to deaccess the port. In these instructions you will find step-by-step instructions on how to properly and safely deaccess the port. These specific instructions are intended for new nurses LVN’s or RN’s who have not completed this task before. Make sure that before anything is removed from the access you have communicated with the doctor and there is an order to deaccess the port-a-cath. The process should take anywhere from 5-10 minutes and these instructions are for nurses working in the hospital setting not home setting. You want to make sure the patient is in a comfortable position before starting and that you have a well-lit area before you start. What you will need: Sterile gloves Clean gloves Sterile gauze 2x2 pad Hand-washing station 2 face mask Alcohol preps Bedside table Tegaderm dressing
