1st Law of Thermodynamics – Energy is constant. Energy can be transferred and transformed, but not created or destroyed. AKA: Principle of conservation of energy. 2 nd Law of Thermodynamics - All of the chemical and physical processes in a closed system tend to drive that system toward maximum entropy . Activation Energy – The energy required to contort the reactant molecules so the bonds can change. Active Site - A specific region of an enzyme where a substrate binds and catalysis takes place . Allosteric Regulation - any case in which a protein’s function at one site is affected by the binding of a regulatory molecule to a separate site. May result in either inhibition or stimulation of an enzyme’s activity. Catabolic Pathways -a series of reactions in a metabolic Pathway that break down complex compounds into simpler ones, usually releasing energy in the process . Catalyst – Chemical agent that speeds up a reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Chemical Energy - That part of the energy in a substance that can be released by a chemical reaction .The potential energy within a given chemical that can potentially
