SE1 DF U1TASK:A passenger aircraft is composed of several millions of parts and requires thousands of persons to assemble. A four-lane highway bridge is another example of complexity. The first version of Word for Windows, a word processor released by Microsoft in 1989, required 55 person-years, resulted into 249,000 lines of source code, and was delivered 4 years late. Aircraft and highway bridges are usually delivered on time and within budget, whereas software is often not. Discuss what are, in your opinion, the differences between developing an aircraft, a bridge, and a word processor that would cause this situation.ANSWERThe only thing that developing an aircraft and building a bridge have in common with developing a word processor is that all three represent complex creations. The major difference between the three is the fact that aircraft and bridge are not innovative in their core.Sure they could contain some new technologies and new know-how respectively, but the core model is already known, done many many times in the past, good practices and rule of thumbs already exist from previous bridges and aircrafts and are implemented in each project and there are even courses on the universities that teach students how to build a bridge and
