Identity Ice Breaker: Tell the group about a time when you or a friend were looked down on for things such as being gay/lesbian, a different nationality than where you live now, or how race has affect you. How did you feel? How were you able to overcome it? Kitty Tsui Why is Kitty Tsui’s character scared to tell her mom who she really is? Why doesn’t the mother in the poem ask when the character is getting married? Do you think the mother is offended when Tsui’s character tells her who she really is? Have you ever been in a situation similar to Tsui’s (Personally or in any other way)? How did you handle that situation? Judith Cofer- In the Poem, “Claims”, Cofer mentions her grandmother carried eight children and three had sunk in her belly, What kind of connotation does this give off? Colfer is from Puerto Rico, and moved to Georgia. How do you think she has adjusted to life in Georgia? Colfer makes a lot of poems about her abuela, how has her abuela affected her life?
