EHR PROJECT2IntroductionTechnology is rapidly advancing not just in the way we treat patients for a variety of ailments and surgical procedures, but for the use of technology to improve patient care at all levels including electronic health records (EHR) and other emerging technologies to improve patient care and hospital efficiency. New technologies are improving response times, patient privacy and safeguarding personal health information in many ways. The use of these technologies also means some challenges including implementation and compliance of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules that regulate privacy and security of protected health information while following Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act which requires all healthcare providers to adopt EHR system in their practice to support integrated healthcare system throughout the nation (Cleveland, 2015). New and emerging technologies range from using cell phones and other electronic devices to improve communication between doctors, nurses, patients and other healthcare providers to the use of medical drones to aid with emergency situations. One of the emerging technology is EHR (Bajwa, 2014). One of the federal requirements of the EHR system is computerized physician order entry, and most of the EHR systems on the market already comes with it. Interoperability helps healthcare systems to share and transfer information (Acrobatiq, 2014). For example, electronic medication dispensing system is linked to EHR system in our hospital. Every time we give medication to a patient, we scan the patient’s unique identifying barcode wrist band and the medication barcode to record the process. Implementation of new technologies takes a concerted effort between many individuals including administrative staff, information technology efforts, hospital management and staff members to adhere to the federal regulation and to improve patient care outcomes.
EHR PROJECT3Project CommitteeTeam members’ role and expertiseThe EHR implementation team can include EHR implementation team lead, implementation manager, physician champion, nurse lead, medical assistant lead, scheduler lead, registration staff lead, laboratory staff lead, information technology (IT) lead, billing staff lead, EHR builder, meaningful use lead, workflow redesign lead and super user/training lead (NationalLearning Consortium, 2012). By bringing in team members with broad spectrum allows us to bring all clinical and operational inputs from different department and their use of EHR to be explored and standardized, so that all employees will get enough training on the EHR for their work to cover their job functionalities. This project committee will consist of an informatic nurse
