Practice Questions: Perceptions 1. Describe four common biases which may influence the impressions that we form of others and give one concrete example for each. Answer: Primacy effect: The tendency for a perceiver to rely on early cues or first impressions (e.g.., a new employee who accidentally spills coffee down his/her shirt is thereafter believed by others to be clumsy). Recency effect: The tendency for a perceiver to rely on recent cues or last impressions (e.g., Bob makes a big blunder just before his performance review. Despite performing very well all year, his boss rates his performance to be only moderate). Projection: The tendency for perceivers to attribute their own thoughts and feelings to others (e.g., Because I am a trustworthy person, I feel comfortable leaving my doors unlocked because I believe that others are also trustworthy). Central traits: Personal characteristics of a target person that are of particular interest to a perceiver (e.g., Intellect is highly salient and important to me. Therefore, I focus on the intellect
