Abby Timberlake Art 155 Section 605 Ritual: Overall, I would agree with Emile Durkheim’s explanation of the division of ritual types. This split into negative and positive actions seems logical to me. I feel that each ritual or rite discussed in this article could be positioned into one of these two areas. The term ritual brings forth a sacredness that is associated with important moments in life, or significant events that have taken place. “Rite” causes me to think of an important occurrence that is based on a more individual level. Ritual can encompass many people celebrating the same event—like a certain feast is shared among the entire community— while rites—such as a life-cycle rite or rite of communion—seem to combine an individual with the spirit or identity that is sought. While this article uses these words almost interchangeably, it seems to me that the author unconsciously associates each with a different type.
