1/22/19 Agon- conflict Shamus eenie Difference between movies and theater -One is cut and edited and done in takes, other is one time to get it right -Movies once they are finished will always be the same, theater performances can change -Theater has an audience which gives feedback and gives a dialogue to the performance -Theater is an immediate art (immediate- non mediated, direct; without an interbeing medium or agency) -Phones are mediated experiences which means there’s a direct contact a.k.a texting, film (there is a projection of light and screen), -Film and TV are mediated art forms while theater is immediate In an immediate art form, there is communion between audience and artist. 1/24/19 Film - TV - Theater One of the main differences is that theater is live and because it's live it's never the same and there's a dialogue between the audience and the performers which can be thought of as a communion. If the actors on stage outnumber people in audience, you don’t do the show because it doesn’t exist without the audience. Actors deal with emotions. Theater is an aurel art form because it comes to you through the ear. Movies can change instantaneously. Films don’t have much dialogue. Storyboarding is done on big budget movies and you draw a comic book of every shot. Commonly used for explosions. The rectangle that you draw each shot in is called the proscenium. Theater comes at you through the ear because most of it is told through dialogue. Theater is difficult for us because we are an eye centered society, taking in info through our eyes. Theater is not an exact art. Why do we need theater? Factual truth- a photograph Theater can give you an emotional truth. Can convey emotion. “Art is the lie that tells the truth.” Pablo Picasso Using artifice to tell us emotional truths. That’s what theater is less realistic that TV or movies. One reason we need theater is because it is a community and gives a communal experience because people go to it as a group. Because we deal with mediated experiences, things are becoming more isolating. Dionysus is the god of theater and wine and any sort of ecstatic state or intoxicants. He’s the god of all bodily fluids. Followers called the bacchants which mean the followers of bacchus. They would carry thyrsus which was a phallic symbol. A shaft with a dripping pinecone and they’d scrape the ground with it and milk would flow. He’s also the god of derangement. Theater started as a ritual to honor this god. He is the twice born god aka a transgender god
because he was given birth by his mom first and then by Zeus’ thigh. Zeus disguised himself as a golden shower to have sex with a nymph called deney. Zeus’ wife would get upset and when he impregnated the mother of dionysus, his wife killed her and zeus grabbed the baby and put it in his thigh and he was born in both a woman and a man.
