Throughout chapter 16 the federal government was faced with many challenges, one being how to reunite the confederate states into union. Another challenge they were faced with was aiding former slaves with the transition to citizenship and how to provide them with the same opportunities as other citizens. There were many challenges that blacks had to go through during the reconstruction, whites were determined to make sure blacks weren’t given the same opportunities as whites did, such as education, being with family, being a part of political life and employment/labor. There were many whites who were opposed to change and believed everything should stay the same. Blacks realized they needed to take matters into their own hands and support one another, specifically becoming independent farmers. The panic of 1873 caused a large economic decrease that lead to thousands of businesses forced to close. A large amount of people lost their job and ones who were fortunate to obtain their job, wages were drastically cut. This
