S. STABLES, APPLIED LEARNING EXPERIENCE Service Learning Applied Learning Experience Fall 2016 Elementary Handwashing Topic This paper contains a journal description of my Service Learning Applied Learning Experience (ALE). My ALE included visiting an elementary school in rural Texas, where we taught school-age children the importance of good hand hygiene. During the visit, the children were taught about germs and how bacteria is spread. After the discussion, each child was taught how to correctly wash his or her hands and then demonstrated their knowledge. The overall goal of the presentation was to educate school-age children on good health habits. Handwashing is a process that effectively reduces the spread of communicable diseases. Regular handwashing is one of the best ways to remove germs (CDC, 2016). Hand hygiene should be regularly performed throughout each day, especially before meals and after making contact with surfaces or items that may contain pathogens. Handwashing includes five simple steps: wetting the hands with clean and warm water, applying soap, lathering and scrubbing hands for at least 20 seconds, rinsing hands well under clean, running water, and then drying the hands with a clean towel. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be useful if one does not have access to soap and water, but do not eliminate all types of germs. This paper includes an analysis of the essential knowledge and skills that I acquired in my collegiate career, both within my discipline and my core curriculum, as well as experiences outside the classroom. This paper will also discuss the interconnectedness of the knowledge and skills that were developed during this experience. Included is an assessment of the impact that the elementary handwashing presentation has had on my global awareness of hygiene and overall wellness as well as an assessment of the larger implications for nursing practice. General Education Core Curriculum There were three courses I completed in my core curriculum at Tarleton State University that contributed to the knowledge and skills necessary to complete my ALE. These courses included Health & Wellness, Public Speech & Communication, and Microbiology.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
