1 TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF NURSING COURSE SYLLABUS NURS 4440-010: NURSING CARE OF THE OLDER ADULT CREDIT HOURS: 4 LECTURE ROOM: TSU CLINICAL DAYS: TBA I. Catalog Course Description Focus is on risk reduction, disease prevention, and strategies for health promotion, restoration, and maintenance in a vulnerable older population. Emphasis is placed on integrating assessment, data analysis, therapeutic communication, and critical thinking skills to direct culturally sensitive care of older adults. Clinical experiences are conducted in a variety of health care settings and the simulation lab. II. Expanded Course Description This course continues to consistently reinforce student learning through geriatric conceptual frameworks. An emphasis will be placed on generational and vulnerability issues of patients as well as role adaptability and professional boundaries of the nurse. Clinical judgment continues to develop through pattern recognition, realistic interventions, outcomes, and priority setting with vulnerable older patients and their families. Concepts of risk reduction, disease prevention, and strategies for health promotion, restoration, and maintenance will be applied to older adult patients. Clinical experiences are conducted in a variety of health care settings and the simulation lab. III. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to: A. Integrate theories of aging into planning, implementation, and evaluation of care of the older adult. B. Recognize and manage geriatric syndromes and the complex interaction of acute and chronic co-morbid conditions common to older adults. C. Utilize knowledge of barriers in communication unique to the older adult to communicate effectively, respectfully, and compassionately with older adults and their families. D. Evaluate data and nursing interventions that focus on chronicity of care of older adults. E. Evaluate older client’s level of self-care capabilities and encourage use of appropriate resources to maintain functionality. F. Plan therapeutic nursing interventions with special awareness of the functional, physical, cognitive, psychological, and social changes common in old age. [Revised 8/27/2016 JJY]

2 G. Teach the older adult patient and family health promotion, injury and disease prevention, and risk reduction techniques appropriate to age and abilities. H. Propose ways nurses can advocate for the vulnerable older population through professional and civic involvement. I. Apply ethical and legal principles to the complex issues that arise in care of older adults. J. Produce a professional quality formal Nursing Process Paper evaluating older adults’ living situations, determining unmet needs, and referring patients to the researched locally available resources.
