Tatiana HaussGrade: 10How the Garcia Girls Lost Their AccentsBy: Julia AlvarezI found the novel “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents,” quite interesting due to the different dynamics within the family and the time period. The novel takes place going back in time from 1989 to 1956, in the Dominican Republic then to eventually to the United States. In my opinion Alvarez, in a simple but meaningful way explained the power of family, the importance of culture, and the impact of language. The four girls in the novel, Carla, Sandra, Yolanda and Sofia, provide the readers with great representations of how important family is. The Garcia family has many traditions and rules, which the girls follow very strictly. For example, a family tradition is to celebrate the father’s birthday with just the daughters. Personally I would appreciate my daughters or sons, to be able to leave their husbands, boyfriends and work at home to celebrate, show me love, and appreciation on my special day.
