Christopher Anosike Professor Palpalini Public law= involves (ex: murder) [categories: criminal law, constitutional law, and administrative law. Private law= involves matters between individuals (ex: leasing of an apartment; a claim against a doctor for making a mistake during surgery; purchasing a new car.) [Categories= contract law, tort law, property law, and family law.] Crime= violation of the duties that an individual owes to his or her community and the breach of which requires the offender. Misdemeanor= usually punishable by less than one year in jail and includes such matters as assault, criminal trespass, and harassment. Beyond a reasonable doubt= “fully satisfied”; “entirely convinced”; “satisfied to a moral certainty” Actus reus= he or she had the necessary state of mind to commit the crime. Mens rea= criminal intent
