Contemp. Moral and Social Issues Discussion  31/01/2008 13:15:00 Theories: Ethical Relativism/objectivism: know distinction btwn o E R: relative to an individual, if you think something’s right, it’s right to  you o Obj: universal laws, in real life, not dependent on the mind, going to be  there even if no one is there to see it o Cultural relativist: go with what culture thinks is right Objection: Nazi Germany- culture claimed it was good to put  Jews in concentration camps so people went with it…doesn’t  make it right o Divine command theory: whatever god commands is moral Piety is equivalent to what God commands Does God command right actions bc they’re right? Are they right bc he commands them? Euthyphro  o Social contract theory Mass population gives Hobbs: people in state of nature (state where no one  cooperates at all) will live bad lives bc people will steal/hurt/kill  people in order to get what they want  Social pressure is the only thing holding people together Socrates thinks: more to the world than just social  pressure o Natural law theory Moral law is natural law, based on human nature
