February 5, 2019 1 Experiment 4A: Determination of a Partition Coefficient for Benzoic Acid in Methylene Chloride and Water Experiment 4B: Solvent Extraction I: Acid-Base Extraction Using the System Benzoic Acid, Methylene Chloride, and Sodium Bicarbonate Solution. Objective: 4A: This exercise illustrate the general procedures that are used to determine a partition coefficient at the microscope level. Experience in weighing milligram quantities of materials on an electronic balance, the use of automatic delivery pipets for accurately dispensing microliter quantities of liquids, the transfer of microliter volumes of solutions with the Pasteur filter pipet, and the use of a Vortex mixer, are techniques encountered in this experiment. 4B: This exercise illustrates an extensively used extraction technique in which a reversible reaction is employed to alter the solubility characteristics of the substance of interest. Experimental Procedure: Experiment 4A and 4B were followed as described in Mayo, pages 144-147, with the modifications listed in the Canvas document. Reaction Scheme: 4A: 4B:

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
