January 29, 2019 1 Experiment 4A: Determination of a Partition Coefficient for 9-Fluorenone in Methylene Chloride and Water Objective: To illustrate the general procedures to determine a partition coefficient at the microscope level. Demonstrate the se of electric balance, automatic delivery pipets for accurately dispensing microliter quantities of liquids, the transfer of microliter volumes of solutions with the Pasteur filter pipet, and the use of a vortex mixer. Experimental Procedure: The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 122-124, with the modifications listed in the Canvas document. Reaction Scheme: Data and Results: Observations: Initial mixture of 9-fluorenone, methylene chloride, and water was yellow. After resting, two layers formed, yellow in the bottom and clear in the top. After heating, methylene chloride became crystalized. 9-Fluorenone Methylene Chloride Water Mol.
