Biol 361 Worksheet: Action potential propagation 1 Name: Student #: 1. Consider the following 3 membrane properties of a cell: R m , R i , C m . For each of the 3 properties, describe how increasing and decreasing them would affect the propagation of signal in an axon. a) increasing R m increasing R m increases length constant (R m /R i ) 0.5 , which acts to increase conduction speed. Increasing R m increases the time constant ( = R m C m ), which acts to decrease conduction speed. b) decreasing R m will decrease conduction speed, because the electrotonic current will decay faster, short  [most axons have leak channels, and since current will always take path of least resistance, current will flow out leak channels, causing decrement of the signal] c) increasing R i decrease , so decrease the spread of electrotonic current flow. Having higher cytoplasmic resistance (lots of proteins, lipids, organelles) will slow spread of electrotonic current d) decreasing R i increase distance that electrotonic current can spread, therefore increase speed of conduction (increases ) e) increasing C m membrane will be able to store large amounts of charge, and so changes in voltage

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
