Hello Classmates, In this discussion board post I will be discussing Outcome 10 : Describe RN responsibility to practice legally and abide by ANA code of ethics. The nursing profession carries certain ethical and moral obligations to patients and the community. Decisions regarding life, dying and death are often common in a nurse’s daily practice (Fowler, 2016). Ethical issues that commonly arise for nurses are related to autonomy, patient’s rights, end of life care, and informed consent. Nurses have a responsibility to deal with these issues by communicating, collaborating, and advocating for the patient. Nurses have important roles as patients’ advocates (Shannon, 2016). If a nurse has concern for a patient’s well-being or safety it is imperative that they speak up and collaborate with others if needed. During a rotation in the ICU unit, the nurse I was shadowing experienced an ethical dilemma with a patient that had suffered a stroke. The patient was unable to communicate after suffering the stroke and her daughter was appointed as the surrogate decision maker. The patient’s ability to talk and communicate was improving and she seemed to be aware of her situation. She had been placed on tube feedings after suffering the stroke but the daughter had expressed that she wanted a peg tube to be placed. The patient was scheduled to have the peg tube placed that day and the nurse I was shadowing was preparing her for surgery. However, when trying to prepare her for transport she became aggressive and uncooperative. The nurse tried to explain the procedure and make sure she knew what was happening but the patient seemed to understand and did not want to have it done.
