Surname 1 Student’s Name: Professor’s Name: Course: Date: Lithium-Ion Batteries On the market today, Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular rechargeable batteries. Whereas they are popular, they have faced a number of issues. They have been hitting the news headlines for the wrong reasons. One of the incidents is that which involved the Boeing 787 battery issues. The culprit in the Boeing 787 incident was the lithium-ion battery which was under a condition referred to as thermal runaway, that is a situation in which the heat from the battery’s failing cells causes the cell and also the surrounding cells to fail, hence producing a lot of heat. During the lithium-ion battery failure incident, it was found out that the issue caused billowing fire and smoke from the APU (auxiliary power unit). Further, it was also found out that the batteries leaked fluid, hissed, popped and gave off a lot of heat. In addition, the incident was as a result of short circuiting inside the lithium-ion batteries. The failure of the battery originated from an internal short-circuiting of the fifth or the sixth cell caused the fire that spread to the other cells- thermal runaway condition. The alarming increase in the number of fire and smoke issues on airlines from the malfunctioning of the Lithium-ion batteries has been a cause of concern as far as safety in the airline industry is concerned. Such incidents have caused a number of flights to be diverted and a number of aircrafts to be grounded till the lithium-ion batteries incidents have been rectified.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
