What is cognitive Psychology? Cognitive psychology is the study of intelligent behavior Cognition is any type of intelligent behavior “what does the mind do that isn’t emotional and social “ Non effective thought The only way we can know human thought is observing behavior, which leads for us to infer thought Much of thought is unconscious Cognitive psychology wants to know how people think and learn, remember (and forget), speak, read, write, pay attention, solve problems, make decisions… We have to observe behavior to infer thought because much of cognition is unconscious and more complex than it seems Artificial Intelligence: A branch of computer science and engineering that is concerned with building machines that can perform some or all of the tasks that humans can do The only was we would be able to have intelligence is if the condition called if-this-then that condition The Scientific Study of the Mind: Historically, the scientific study of the mind was considered impossible o How can output of the soul be related to the body? (the Mind-Body problem) Early research in human perception inspired others to approach the study of the mind scientifically Psychophysics: studying the physical stimulus and our mental processes towards it. o E.g: we see a light, how do we perceive it. o Started the conversation of psychology There are three different arms of the field of cognitive psychology o Complexity of the individual o Neuroscience: understanding how the brain works o Artificial intelligence

The Mind Body Problem : The question of how many mental events such as thoughts, beliefs and sensations are related to or caused by physical mechanisms taking place in the body such as cellular or molecular processes Dualism : the view that the mind and body consist fundamentally of different kinds of substances and properties. Body is physical and mind is not o first formally introduced to the world by Plato and then Rene Descartes went into depth with it o Descartes identified the pineal gland a structure in the center of the brain as a likely location Monism : idea that there is only one kind of basic substance in this world. There is only physical matter- physicalism or materialism or alternate that the mind is real, a view known as idealism. Neutral monism: belief that there is only one kind of substance and that the mind and body are one thing the brain functions within the body which provides sensory information and the ability to move. The body is embedded within an environment and society and the local society is embedded In a larger structure of the world o Brain Body Society World Brain contains 100 billion neurons WITH 7000 connections EACH
